DUTCH ELECTIONS - WITH A VERY CHANGED POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

On Wednesday 22 November, the NETHERLANDS will go to the polls. All 150 members of Parliament are elected. It is a premature election. The sitting coalition government (led by MARK RUTTE and with the liberals, D66 and the Christian Democratic Party) could not agree on a new immigration package after long disputes. And the political situation in the country has changed a lot since last time - with new parties.

The opinion polls here three weeks before the election point to the following main results:

1. VVD (the liberals): 30 mandates (now 34). New manager: Mrs. Jesilgus ( daughter of Turkish immigrants )

2. NSC ( National Social Contract ): 33 . Brand new batch. Wants a new way to rule.

3. BBB ( Peasant Movement ): 13 Brand new party, right-wing. Strong at the last local election.

4. VL (United Left): 23. Tidli. the social democracy and the greens. Manager: FransTimmermans -

former deputy chairman of the EU Commission

5. D 66:8 (now 24). Middle part. The big one loses this time.

6. CDA: 5 ( now 14 ). The Christian Democratic Party. The NSC mainly consists of defectors from here

7. PVV: 20 ( now 19 ). Geert Wilder's very right-wing party, which no one wants to cooperate with

This picture may of course change somewhat before the election. But as it stands now, the next government will consist of VVD, NSC and VL. That is, if they can reach a majority of at least 76 mandates.

If that is not the case, it is possible that a minority government will emerge. You have never had that in the Netherlands.

In the meantime, former Prime Minister Mark Rutte (56) has expressed an interest in becoming NATO's new Secretary General when Jens Stoltenberg steps down in October 2024.
