GREECE - POLITICAL SITUATION AFTER THE CONSERVATIVES' BIG VICTORY IN MAY
On 21 May this year there were parliamentary elections in GREECE. Here the conservatives - NEW DEMOCRACY - led by Prime Minister Mitsotakis won a huge victory. They got 158 of the parliament's 300 seats. They therefore have an absolute majority. The big loser was the former ruling party, the leftist SYRIZA.
Since the election, SYRIZA has been in major internal difficulties - with several different groupings in the party. Among other things. the leader, Sakis Kassalakis, is not considered by parts of the party to be left-oriented enough. And some members have also left the party. Therefore, the party has not succeeded in coming up with alternative programs for the government.
The price increases have of course also affected Greece. However, inflation was only 2.7% last month. The government is working hard to attract as much investment as possible from abroad.
The expected increase in the country's gross domestic product for this year is 2.2%. A solid economy.
In terms of foreign policy, the country remains strongly concerned about Turkey's and President Erdogan's threats, not least against the many Greek islands close to Turkey. However, both countries' NATO membership has so far helped to prevent the threats from becoming a serious reality.
The war in Gaza shares the opinion of the Greek population. The left-wing and the extreme right-wing strongly criticize Israel, while the rest show understanding of what is happening.
