UKRAINE - OUR SUPPORT CONTINUES AND WILL BE STRENGTHEND
The UKRAINE war continues unabated. We must all remember and respond to that. Gaza is important to us. But Ukraine is even more important. It is one of our free European countries, one of our neighbours, and a country that is on its way into the EU and NATO. The Russian war leadership naturally hopes that attention will now concentrate on the Middle East and not on their crimes in Ukraine. It must NOT happen. On the contrary.
On Wednesday, the EU Commission will complete its report on how far Ukraine has come in the preparations for membership negotiations. According to President Ursula von der Leyen - who is currently in Kyiv - the country has completed 90% of what was requested. The final decision on any to start accession negotiations with Ukraine will be taken by the EU's heads of state and government at their next meeting on 14-15 December. It must be done unanimously. If it is a YES, the Commission will start the negotiations.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at a conference this week that Germany is in favor of Ukraine's EU membership as soon as possible.
The European Parliament is considering allowing the EU's candidate countries, including Ukraine, to have members of Parliament with observer status if the negotiations get under way.
At the same time, the EU countries' military support for the Ukrainians continues on a large scale.
The reconstruction of the country is also concretely underway. It has been decided that large parts of the frozen Russian funds in the West can be used for reconstruction. And e.g. Denmark has undertaken the reconstruction of the city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine. And there is already a Danish office and Danish companies involved. This port city has 470,000 inhabitants.
The USA has also just today given its support package no. 50 to Ukraine. It includes some of the powerful weapons that the Ukrainians have wanted.
